Caucasian Shirvan Kilim

Richard E. Wright (Caucasian Carpets & Covers, 1995) states that this kilim is an Azeri cover (kilim) from the Caucasus' district of Kazakh. All wool. All vegetable dyes. Slit weave technique. In the late middle ages, the Kara Koyunlu were a powerful confederation in NW Persia. About 1775, a group with this heritage arrived in the Kazakh district from the Karabagh district. Kilims with this pattern, woven in a village named after them, were referred to as Kara Koyunlu. Circa 1895.
